Since I've been in Italy for almost three months, I decided to use this post to talk about some of the amazing people I've met while living here. Moving to a country where everyone speaks a different language can seem overwhelming and you might think that would make it harder to make friends, but I actually think asking for help understanding things in Italy opened me up to more relationships than I would've had if I had visited an english speaking country. One of the most amazing people I've met here is named Andrea and we never would have gotten to know each other if I hadn't needed help asking for eyedrops in the pharmacy by my apartment. My friend Jess introduced me to Andrea while we were walking home from class one day and my eye was itching because I had pet a dog. I needed to get eye drops, but had no idea how to ask for them in italian. After hearing this Andrea went with me to the pharmacy and helped me ask the man behind the counter for help. Now, not only are we great friends, but he helps me with my italian as well. Similarly, I know many people who work at the pharmacy, supermarket and the local cafes because every time I go into these places they are more than happy to help me with my italian and to help me with anything else I am having trouble with. I also help them with their english sometimes and we always exchange information about the cultures we come from. One of my favorite place that I have met people from Sorrento is called the English Inn (now called Mermaid). Not only are the bar tenders there two of the nicest and most protective people I have ever met, but a lot of people who go there are fun to hang out with as well. Always remember to be careful though, not everyone will be kind or safe to talk to while you are abroad. Finally, I want to talk about the amazing people I have met through my school, Sant'Anna Institute. My school here in Sorrento is made up entirely of students from the US. At first I wasn't sure how I felt about this because I wanted to be fully immersed in italian culture, but I ended up truly loving all of the people I have met in this program. Having friends who understand what you are going through in terms of homesickness, culture shock, and anxiety is such an important part of being abroad. Meeting people from all over the US has also allowed me to grow culturally in other ways. Along with this it has given me endless people that I can connect with and visit once we return home. As my time in Sorrento gets closer to the end, I'm sad to leave all the friends I have made, but I am forever grateful to have met them.
