For this post I want to talk a little bit about holidays in Italy! I decided to do this post now because this weekend there were three very important holidays. One of them is entirely American, the other unique to Sorrento, and the other a bit of both cultures. The first important holiday that happened this weekend was Super Bowl Sunday. Now, obviously this holiday is not celebrated in Italy at all since it is centered around American Football. A few of my friends and I attempted to find a bar that would stay open late and stream the game for us, but unfortunately the tourist season has not quite picked up in Sorrento yet. Another obstacle in the way of our viewing party was the time difference. Since the game began at 6:30 PM EST it started at 12:30 AM in Italy. This, however, was not going to stop us avid football fans from watching the game. Since none of the local bars were showing it, we ended up all getting together in the dorms and watching it on a big projector. This was honestly even more fun than watching in a bar because we got to dress comfy and make snacks. Not everyone stayed up for the whole game. A few people didn't even make it to halftime since it was so late. Overall watching the game in Italy was really cool, but definitely not the same as watching it at home. Next year I'm looking forward to making sandwiches on hard rolls and eating chips with buffalo chicken dip! Oh, and also snuggling with my dog! Another holiday that fell on this weekend was Valentine's day. This is a holiday that is celebrated in both the US and Italy on February 14th. We went to Naples for a field trip this weekend and the city was all decorated for Valentines day! While I thought Valentine's Day would be less commercialized here than at home, this is not actually the case from what I've seen! The vast majority of the decorations are just as cheesy and love-centered, while restaurants and stores in the area definitely capitalize on the romance themed holiday. Some cities around Italy have entire Valentine's Day Festivals, but none compares to Sorrento's St. Antonino Festival. As Sorrento's patron saint, St. Antonino gets not only a holiday, but an entire weekend-long festival to himself. His holiday also happens to fall on Valentine's Day, but is never overshadowed in his home town. The St. Antonino festival is incredible! Not only did they decorate the entirety of Sorrento in lights, similarly to the decorations they had up at the beginning of the semester for Christmas, but they also set up an entire street fair. Tents line the streets selling food, clothes, candy, and all other sorts of festive items. I unfortunately did not get to go to the festival on Sunday since I was on a field trip to Napoli for my Mafia class, but I did get to go on Monday and it was amazing! Definitely a once in a life time experience that I was lucky to have here in Sorrento!
